Campus life: faith communities, Greek chapters, LGBTQ+ support, and state laws

Campus life now lists faith communities, fraternity and sorority chapters, and LGBTQ+ centers and policies from national organizations' own lists, each credited, plus state laws in nine states and facts checked on 12 colleges' own pages.

What's new

  • Profile → Campus life → Religious life: which faith communities have a group on campus (Chabad, Catholic FOCUS, Reformed University Fellowship, The Navigators, Secular Student Alliance chapters), grouped by tradition. Each comes from the organization's own list, credited and dated in its ⓘ. Members of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities now count as "Faith-centered".
  • Profile → Campus life → Greek life: which fraternity and sorority councils have chapters on campus (Panhellenic, Interfraternity, historically Black, Latino, Asian, multicultural), from each organization's chapter list. Where we read the college's own fraternity and sorority office, its chapter counts by council too.
  • Profile → Campus life → LGBTQ+ life: an LGBTQ+ center or office, and a policy checklist: gender-inclusive housing, chosen names on records, nondiscrimination covering gender identity, and more. Each item says who lists it (the Trans Policy Clearinghouse or the college's own page) and when. A list never turns into a "No": if no one lists a policy, nothing is shown. Where a religious college's conduct code restricts same-sex relationships or gender expression, we quote it.
  • State laws: public colleges in nine states show a line on the state law that limits identity-based or diversity, equity, and inclusion offices or programs, linked to the statute. In Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Texas, and Utah the law names programs around gender identity or sexual orientation; in Ohio, Tennessee, and North Carolina it's a general ban on such offices, and the line says the law doesn't name them.
  • Explore: filter by colleges with a Jewish, Catholic, or other faith community; with historically Black, Latino, Asian, or multicultural Greek chapters; with an LGBTQ+ center, gender-inclusive housing, or a nondiscrimination policy covering gender identity.
  • Compare: rows for Greek councils and the LGBTQ+ policy checklist.

Behind the scenes

  • About 30 national lists were read politely (following each site's robots.txt, identifying ourselves, never getting around a block) and matched to colleges by name and state, with hard cases checked by hand. Sites that block automated reading are recorded, not worked around.
  • A pilot read 25 colleges' own pages with AI models, checked every quote against its page, and had a second model re-check every "No" and every conduct-code finding. Scored against a hand-checked answer key, only fact types that were right about 95% of the time are shown; the rest wait for a better run.
  • Next: improve the per-college reading before running it on every college, read more organizations' lists, and ask organizations such as Hillel for their data directly. See the roadmap.
