What's new
- Profile header: the setting ("Large city", "Distant town"), the research tier (R1, R2, or research college), and designations such as HBCU, Hispanic-Serving, land-grant, or women's college. Tap any of them for a plain definition.
- Explore → Map: a new view beside cards, table, and chart that puts every matching college on a U.S. map. Dots are colored public or private and sized by undergrads, as in the chart view. Hover or tap a dot for details; click to open the profile.
- Explore → Campus filters: filter by setting (city, suburb, town, rural), research tier, and designation. Combine them with the map to see, say, every HBCU or every rural Hispanic-Serving college. An Opportunity colleges toggle shows the 260 colleges the Carnegie Classification rates as higher access and higher earnings: they enroll many lower-income students, and their graduates earn well.
- Home: three new starting points under "What kind of school are you after?": Opportunity colleges, HBCUs, and research universities.
- Compare: rows for setting, Carnegie class, research activity, Carnegie's student access and earnings class, and designations.
- Glossary: setting (locale), Carnegie classification, R1, student access and earnings, HBCU, Hispanic-Serving, single-sex college, tribal college, and land-grant.
Behind the scenes
- A new federal source: the IPEDS directory, which lists every college's location, setting, and Carnegie classification. Minority-serving and single-sex designations come from College Scorecard. No existing value changed.
- The map shows the 50 states and DC. Colleges in U.S. territories are counted under the map rather than drawn.
- Each data update now checks that the directory and College Scorecard describe the same college under each ID (same state and name, not closed or merged), and flags any that don't. None did.
- The roadmap has a new Later section for ideas that are worked out but wait until a feature needs them. First in it: each college's metro area.
- First of the eight wave 2 specs on the roadmap: campus-profile.md.
