Loans and repayment: who borrows, debt by background, and repayment status

How many students borrow, how much debt students from different backgrounds leave with, and how former students are doing three years into repayment.

What's new

Profile → Cost & outcomes gets a "Borrowing and repayment" card (folded behind a Show button on phones):

  • The share of undergraduates with a federal loan, against the median college, in a plain line such as "About 1 in 4 undergrads borrows federally".
  • Median federal debt by background: Pell or no Pell, and three family-income bands.
  • Where former students stand three years into repayment: paid in full, paying it down, paused, not paying it down, behind or in default, or forgiven.

Also:

  • Known for: "Few students borrow", for the lowest 5% of loan rates among colleges with 1,000+ undergraduates.
  • Explore: a "Few students borrow" filter (20% or fewer; 271 colleges), a Borrow column, and a sort.
  • Compare: two new rows. Glossary: three new terms.

Behind the scenes

  • The loan rate is for the same school year as the site's cost figures, and matches the federal aid survey (Michigan 24%, Vanderbilt 10%).
  • Coverage: loan rate 1,882 colleges, debt by background about 1,700, repayment 1,735. No existing value changed.
  • Repayment status has eight categories, some published as ranges. The bar only shows when all eight are published and add up to about 100% (1,680 colleges).
  • Loan-rate history followed in the next release.
