Trends by state

Most students go to college close to home, and state policy moves whole groups of colleges at once. Pick a measure to color the map, or tap a state for its own page. States with fewer than 10 colleges on the site () show counts only.

How this was measured

  • Which colleges. Every change is over a : colleges with 300 or more undergraduates in both fall 2014 and fall 2024. A state's own page says how many of its colleges are in the panel.
  • 10 colleges, not 30. States are a fixed set readers expect to find, and most have fewer than 30 colleges on the site, so the usual 30-college floor relaxes to 10 here.
  • Today's classification for public/private and territory status. , not as they were in fall 2014.
  • No rankings by quality. The map and table are descriptive; a bigger or smaller change isn't better or worse, and the site doesn't attribute a state's change to a policy.
  • Net first-year inflow and the inflow/outflow columns are a single snapshot, fall 2024 (the newest fall the site's per-college home-state tables cover), over campus-based colleges: not that fall, not for-profit, and not a campus that merged or split. They count only first-years at four-year colleges on this site, so a resident who starts at a college not on the site is invisible on both sides.
